Goat Breeds: Tauernschecken (skewbald or piebald goat breed of the 
Tauern Mountain Range): This breed is characterised by good milk 
performance and fast-growing kids, about two of which are born each 
year; has been bred in the area around Grossglockner mountain 
(especially in the Rauris Valley) since the beginning of the 
19%%sup th/%  century. Breeding records have been kept since 1967. In 
1994 there were about 20 breeders with some 100 registered goats. The 
Tauernschecken were selectively bred for their skewbald coat, so that 
they could be easily found both in summer and after snowfall. 
Short-haired, with brown/white or black/white patches or 
three-coloured, horned goat. Shoulders and back are often of dark 
colour. Many have a blaze. Male goats reach 80 cm height at 
withers, weighing 70 kg, female goats reach 74 cm and weigh 
55-60 kg. Pinzgau Goat: brown goat with black head, dorsal stripe 
and legs. Billies have big curved horns and are fairly aggressive. 
They reach 75-85 cm height at withers, weighing 65 kg, 
nannies reach 70-80 cm, weighing 45 kg.
