b. Vienna, June 9, 1927, teacher and politician (Social Democratic 
Party, SPOe); husband of Dagmar  Koller. 1967-1974 programme director 
of the Austrian broadcasting corporation ORF, 1979 City Councillor for 
Cultural Affairs, 1983/1984 Federal Minister of Education and Culture, 
1984-1994 Mayor and Landeshauptmann of Vienna. Popular municipal 
politician, famous for his sometimes unconventional political style. 
Seriously injured in a letter-bomb attack in 1993.
