Engineering Consultant (German: Ziviltechniker): Exercising the
profession of an "Engineering Consultant authorised and sworn by
the state" (Federal Law of 1957) is conditional on licensing by
the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs; the profession comprises the
following branches: architects (project work, town and country
planning, works supervision), consulting engineers
("Ingenieurkonsulent", with the additional functions of
consulting and representing clients), and patent engineers (whose
functions also include technical testing and expert opinions).
Engineering consultants have to meet the following criteria:
completion of engineering studies, 5 years of practice, and passing
the engineering consultant examination. Expertises, plans and
certificates drawn up by engineering consultants are held to be public
documents.
