Catholic Adult Education Institutions in Austria were provided by the 
Arbeitsgemeinschaft Katholischer Bildungswerke, the 
Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Katholischer Bildungsheime, the 
Arbeitsgemeinschaften fuer katholische Erwachsenenbildung of the 
dioceses, the Austrian Borromeo Association (Borromaeuswerk) and the 
institutes and centres of Catholic adult education (ICAE): the 
institute of correspondence courses in theology (Fernkurs fuer 
theologische Bildung), the Catholic Social Academy, the Austrian 
Catholic Bible studies association (Oesterreichisches Katholisches 
Bibelwerk), etc.) until 1997; Catholic adult education has been 
coordinated by the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft (BAKEB), an association 
at federal level, since 1968. In 1997 the "Forum for Catholic 
Adult Education in Austria" (Forum katholischer 
Erwachsenenbildung in Oesterreich) was founded by 67 education 
institutions as an umbrella organization. The wide range of courses 
has found broad public acclaim (in 1998: 47,189 lectures, courses, 
etc. with 341,010 participants).
