b. Hanau (Germany), May 24, 1812, 
d. Vienna, Sept. 20, 1866, painter of battle scenes, genre pictures 
and portraits; uncle of Sigmund  l'Allemand. From 1826 in Vienna, 
studied at the Vienna Academy; 1842 in Duesseldorf and Munich. Popular 
among the high nobility as a painter of battle scenes, created e.g. 
the graphic series "Die oesterreichische Armee im Laufe zweier 
Jahrhunderte" ("The Austrian army over two centuries") and numerous 
studies of uniforms.
