A rare subtropical tree that is endemic to the Island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Madeira & Cape Verde, where only a few specimens can be found growing naturally on the islands of Tenerife and La Palma, in dry bush at the low elevations of the islands' rocky mountain ranges. Many ancient examples are 20 to 30 feet tall and believed to be up to a thousand years old. Dragon’s Blood trees were introduced to Australia as seed, in the early colonial days. It can grow in frost free areas across Southern Australia and prefer a warm, open, sunny aspect with good drainage. It's a hardy tree and can live for well over 400 years. They can be propagated from cuttings, just remove a branched section at the node, up to a metre long and plant in a sandy mix in full sun and stake it so it doesn’t moves and be careful not to break the growing tip. It's called a Dragon's Blood Tree, because the red latex material is excised and mixed with another compound to make the red lustre varnish used to coat violins. Dragon's Blood trees have been used throughout the ages for everything from staining wood to healing cuts and scrapes to magical ceremonies.| Dragon's Blood Tree| Alex Proimos from Sydney, Australia| [{Image src='https://www.austria-forum.org/cc/images/slim/by.png' alt='CC BY 2.0' align='center' link='https://www.austria-forum.org/cc/by-20.html' target='_blank'}]| Datei:Dragons Blood Tree (4054489997).jpg | Kanarischer Drachenbaum in Icod de los Vinos ( Originaltext: Der 600 Jahre alte Drachenbaum in Icod, Wahrzeichen von Teneriffa ; Dezember 2003. )| Selbst fotografiert| Steffen Mokosch| [{Image src='https://www.austria-forum.org/cc/images/slim/by-sa.png' alt='CC BY-SA 3.0' align='center' link='https://www.austria-forum.org/cc/by-sa-30.html' target='_blank'}]| Datei:Kanarischer Drachenbaum in Icod de los Vinos.jpg %% %%
