| The two boards to the left are both of Pine tree wood ( Pinus sylvestris ) , and the one to the right is of spruce wood ( Picea abies ) . Typical differences are: 1. Pine has reddish hart wood and light sape wood and a rather distinct border between. 2. The knots in pine wood usually have stronger contrast than those of spruces, which use to be more "soft" colored. 3. In the spruce-wood, but never in the pine wood, there may be spread out small single knots (not shown in this photo).
