It is one of the most inhospitable, driest and hottest regions on our planet - and yet it is the cradle of humankind. The Danakil Depression[{GoogleMap location='Afar, Ethiopia' zoom='7'}] once lay at the bottom of an ocean, was then tectonically lifted and dried out, but still lies 100 m below sea level. Temperatures above 50 degrees are not uncommon. Because of the precarious security situation, the northern areas of the desert can only be visited with an armed escort at the moment, so it is probably better to cross only the southern parts to visit the mysterious Afar people.

Sie gehört zu den unwirtlichsten, trockendsten und heißesten Gebieten unseres Planeten – und doch ist sie die Wiege der Menschheit. Die Danakil-Wüste[{GoogleMap location='Afar, Ethiopia' zoom='7'}] lag einst am Grund eines Meeres, wurde dann tektonisch gehoben, trocknete aus, liegt aber immer noch 100 m unter dem Meeresspiegel. Temperaturen über 50 Grad sind keine Seltenheit. Die nördlichen Gebiete der Wüste sind derzeit aufgrund der prekären Sicherheitslage nur mit bewaffnetem Begleitschutz zu bereisen sodass es wohl besser ist, nur die südlichen Ausläufer zu durchqueren, um das geheimnisvolle Volk der Afar zu besuchen.
