No other Moroccan city transports the visitor back to the Islamic Middle Ages so abruptly like Fes[{GoogleMap location='Fes, Morocco' zoom='7'}], the oldest of the four imperial cities. Intermittently, it was the capital of Morocco from 793 to 1912. In the meantime, about a million people live in the metropolis, which is still considered the spiritual heart of the country.
