The tongue of the Perito Moreno Glacier [{GoogleMap location='-50.483333, -73.05' zoom='9' title='Perito Moreno Galcier'}] closes every now then the southern side arm, called Brazo Rico, off of the Lago Argentino [{GoogleMap location='Lago Argentino' zoom='9'}] and dams it up so that the water level is (up to 23,5m) higher than the one of the Lago Argentino. When the pressure is getting too high the dam breaks and drains the Brazo Rico. This spectacle occurs averagely every two to four years, whereby the side arm is, even for a short time, connected to the Lago Argentino. The calving front at the Brazo Rico and at the second closed off side arm, the Canal de los Témpanos, reaches a height of 55 to77m above the water level.
