Geboren wurde Schöpfergott Viracocha auf der benachbarten Sonneninsel. Seine beiden Kinder Manco Kapac und Mama Ocllo, die mythischen Urahnen der Inka, machten sich von hier aus auf, um Cuzco, die Keimzelle des späteren Reiches, zu gründen.
