Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá [{GoogleMap location='32.7843329,-117.1060741' zoom='12'}] was the first Franciscan mission in the Las Californias Province of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. It was founded on July 16, 1769 by Spanish friar Junípero Serra in an area inhabited by Indians. The mission was named after the Catholic Saint Didacus (more commonly known as San Diego).
