The Cherokee are a Native American tribe indigenous to the Southeastern United States (mainly Georgia [{GoogleMap location='Georgia, USA' zoom='5'}], Tennessee [{GoogleMap location='Tennessee, USA' zoom='5'}], North Carolina [{GoogleMap location='North Carolina, USA' zoom='5'}] and Sotuh Carolina [{GoogleMap location='South Carolina, USA' zoom='5'}]. European settlers called the Cherokee one of the "Five Civilized Tribes" because they adopted several cultural and technological practices of the settlers. The Cherokee became one of the first major, non-European ethnic group to become U.S. citizens. The Cherokee Nation has more than 314,000 members according to the 2010 U.S. Census, which makes it the largest of the 566 federally recognized Native American tribes. Two of the federally recognized Cherokee tribes, the Cherokee Nation and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians (UKB) have headquarters in Tahlequah, Oklahoma [{GoogleMap location='Tahlequah, Oklahoma 74464, USA' zoom='8'}].
