Shwedagon’s largest bell weighs 23 tons and was cast in 1779 when the pagoda reached today’s height. After being destroyed by earthquakes, being rebuilt and expanded, Shwedagon now has a construction tradition centuries long. The first stupa was built here 2,500 years ago. Until today the sacred structure is the most dignified place for the introduction of young novices.
