Als strategisch wichtiger Hafen lockte die Stadt bereits Phönizier und Griechen an, später Römer, Venezianer und Genuesen. An die bewegte Vergangenheit erinnert die fast 2000 Jahre alte römische Festung in Gonio. Ihr Mauerring besitzt eine Länge von 900 Metern und war durch 22 Wachtürme geschützt.
