!!!Cachetia- the wine growing region of Georgia

%%lang,english
East of Tbilisi is Cachetia, the area that is said to be the origin of wine growing. A famous small village there is Sighnaghi [{GoogleMap location='41.6115561,45.9103631', zoom='9' }]. It is located about 120 km East of the capital an has a triangular city wall that for a long time symbolized the city as independent kingdom. It is a UNESCO world heritage site, with two remarks the writer of these lines (Hermann Maurer, Graz/Austria) cannot suppress: (a) the village does not seem that distinct or impressive to deserve such recognition and (b) if a place does become entitled to be a UNESCO world heritage site it should be forced to have a minimum of hygenic installations.

After a picnic of local bread, cheese and vegetables the progam of this trip still includes the visit of the church of Gremi. After this, the day ends on a local winery, where some of the wine is still fermented in amphoras burried in the ground, as tradition has it.

The remaining pictures show the winery Schuchmann, were wine is produced both in traditional Georgian fashion but also (most of it) using modern techniques fit for any winery in central Europe. Well, of course there is a wine tasting included.
