Medan [{GoogleMap location='Medan, Indonesia' zoom='7'}] is the capital of the North Sumatra province and the third biggest city in Indonesia behind Jakarta and Surabaya. Most of its more than 2,000,000 inhabitants are Muslim (followed by Christians with about 30%). 

The Great Mosque of Medan was designed by a Dutch architect in the beginning of the 20th century as a part of the Maimun palace complex with an octagonal symmetrical layout, combining architectural elements from Morocco, Europe and the Middle East.
