With an area of 2.7 million km², Kazakhstan is the largest land-locked country in the world, in which Austria would fit into 32 times. The country is one of the most resource-rich regions of Asia with huge deposits of oil, gas, iron, coal, uranium, copper, gold and many other valuable minerals. They bestow on the country the highest economic development of all Central Asian states. Nevertheless, the living standard of Kazakhs is comparatively low, because the real wealth as well as the power of the state is concentrated in the hands of the dictatorial President Nazarbayev and his family.
