The observatory in close proximity to the tombs is with 1.400 years the oldest observatory of Asia. Basic information of the annual calendar, like solstices and equinoxes, were determined with the help of the stone structure. Even the construction itself codes astronomic data: the tower is built on 12 foundation plates representing the 12 moths. The 30 layers of stone, symbol of the days of the lunar month consist of a total of 366 stones, in accordance with a leap year of the solar calendar.
