The name of the city Shakhty[{GoogleMap location='Shakhty', zoom='8'}] was chosen due to its strong association with coal mining. In 1941, an independent Cossack republic had been declared here. During the Great Patriotic War, the city was occupied by the Germans and many coal pits and buildings were blown up by the Germans when they retreated in 1943. During the Brezhnev years, the city was at its height with a population of over 250,000, and about ten million tons of coal being mined each year.

Der Name der Stadt Shakhty[{GoogleMap location='Shakhty', zoom='8'}]  wurde wegen ihrer starken Verbindung zum Kohlebergbau gewählt. Im Jahr 1941 wurde hier eine unabhängige Kosakenrepublik ausgerufen. Während des Großen Vaterländischen Kriegs wurde die Stadt von den Deutschen besetzt und zahlreiche Kohlegruben und Gebäude bei ihrem Abzug im Jahr 1943 gesprengt. Während der Breschnew-Jahre erlebte die Stadt ihre Blütezeit mit einer Bevölkerung von mehr als 250.000 und einem Abbau von etwa zehn Millionen Tonnen Kohle pro Jahr.
