This is a typical window in Shibam. It looks like a face. The eyes, the two upper round openings, are for the men to look down to see if a visitor belongs to the family or is accepted. The central projecting perforated box is for women; they might look down, but cannot be seen from the street. The grid at the bottom represents the teeth of the face.
