The emperor's mausoleum had the shape of an octagon surrounded by an open corridor of 24 Corinthian columns. The burial ground has remained intact. But without a casket, because only decades after the death of the 'divine ruler' it has been turned into a cathedral - remarkable as Diocletian had ordered the last, but most brutal, wave of Christian persecution.
