Kourion's real reason for its supra-regional importance lies a few kilometres outside the former town centre. The temple complex of Apollo Hylates was built around an ancient sanctuary. Here the son of Zeus, the protector of the forest and the animals, was worshipped. A flourishing pilgrimage tourism for at least 1300 years made the city's cash tills ring.

Kourions eigentlicher Grund für seine überregionale Bedeutung liegt ein paar Kilometer außerhalb des einstigen Stadtzentrums. Rund um ein uraltes Baumheiligtum breitete sich der Tempelkomplex des Apollon Hylates aus. Hier huldigte man dem Sohn des Zeus, dem Beschützer des Waldes und der Tiere. Ein florierender Pilgertourismus über mindestens 1300 Jahre ließ die Stadtkassen klingeln.
