In Roman times up to 100,000 people lived here with all the conveniences of that time. These included huge thermal baths, as hardly anything was as important to the Romans as their daily wellness program. Here, the male world met, discussing politics and philosophy and negotiating business. As with all public buildings, only the elite with the status of Roman citizens, had access to it. Normally, they worked no longer than until noon. In the afternoon they preferred strolling on the streets or relaxing in the thermal baths. The trade flourished even without too much commitment to work, which was usually done by slaves anyway. One knew how to live in the cities of the Roman Empire.
