Strikingly, Dionysos often occupies the centre stage. Appropriately enough, the god of joy, fertility and wine was also competent for madness and ecstasy. There is no doubt about Dionysos's father: it was Zeus. But the ancient sources could not agree on his mother: five are at choice: Demeter, Io, Persephone, Lethe and the mortal Semele. The Romans did not bother. To have fun, that's the main thing. Scarcely any other culture lived so much in this world, and attached so much importance to the enjoyment of life as the Romans did. To work longer than until noon, was considered indecent. In the afternoon, they strolled discussing around the streets, pampered themselves in the thermal baths, enjoyed themselves on jamborees, or amused themselves attending pompous theatre performances, later on also gladiator fights and animal chases.

Auffallend oft steht Dionysos im Mittelpunkt. Der Gott der Freude, der Fruchtbarkeit und des Weines war passenderweise auch für Wahnsinn und Extase zuständig. Über Dionysos Vater besteht kein Zweifel: es war Zeus. Aber über seine Mutter konnten sich die antiken Quellen nicht einigen: gleich fünf stehen zur Auswahl: Demeter, Io, Persephone, Lethe sowie die Sterbliche Semele. Die Römer störte das wenig. Hauptsache, das Leben macht Spaß. Kaum eine Kultur lebte sosehr im Diesseits und maß dem Lebensgenuss eine so überragende Bedeutung bei wie die Römer. Länger, als bis Mittag zu arbeiten, galt als unschicklich. Nachmittags flanierte man diskutierend durch die Straßen, ließ sich in den Thermen verwöhnen, vergnügte sich auf rauschenden Gelagen oder amüsierte sich bei pompösen Theateraufführungen und später auch bei Gladiatorenkämpfen und Tierhatzen.
