Nuremberg Castle [{GoogleMap location='Kaiserburg Nürnberg, Burg, Nürnberg, Deutschland' zoom='17'}], one of Europe's most formidable medieval fortifications, is the town's landmark and overlooks the city from the top of an elongated sandstone rock. There are three different parts which form Nuremberg Castle, the Imperial castle (Kaiserburg), the Burgraves of Nuremberg (Burggrafenburg) and the municipal buildings of the Imperial City (Reichsstädtische Bauten). In recent years archaeological investigation were undertaken which lead to the assumption that the site was already settled around the year 1000, but no documentary proof is known. During World War II the castle was damaged and later on, after the war, restored.
