The name of the city of Schleswig[{GoogleMap location='Schleswig' zoom='10'}] means in Old Norse as much as 'Bay of the Schlei' or 'Port of the Schlei'. Originally a trading centre of the Vikings, the city celebrated its 1200th anniversary in 2004. The cathedral is first mentioned in 1134 by a Danish historian. Today, the Cathedral of St. Peter, as the Dominican church of the bishop for Schleswig and Holstein of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church in North Germany, is one of the most important architectural monuments of Schleswig-Holstein. The church building was designed as a three-aisled Romanesque basilica and, between the 13th and 15th century, extended in Gothic style. This very day the cathedral is entered through the Romanesque Petri-Portal dating from around 1180.
