There is one aspect that has to avoided in icons: to provide the illusion of three dimensional space by using perspective: This would take away the religious intent.

This is also the reason why sculptures are not allowed in sacred places!

Und Eines dürfen Ikonen niemals: durch Anwendung der Perspektive die Illusion von Raum schaffen, denn das würde den Heiligenbildern das Durchgeistigte nehmen. Deswegen sind in sakralen Bereichen auch keine Skulpturen zugelassen.
