The caves of Matala[{GoogleMap location='Matala, Crete' zoom='9'}] lead back to the Stone Age. The Neolithic people created a perfect home decor here more than 6000 years ago. The place also has great significance for Greek mythology, because here Zeus is said to have gone ashore with his abducted Europe. Later, in the 1960s, Matala again became famous, this time by hippies of the Flower Power movement, who lived their social counter movement on the fine sandy beach with meditation, music and drugs. Even Cat Stevens and Bob Dylan were here - until the authorities stopped tolerating it: they listed the rock holes as a National Monument.
