An uninhabited, rocky spur called Gramvousa forms the northwestern corner of Crete. Only a gravel road leads to the top of the peninsula. There begins a half-hour stairway that finally ends in the most beautiful bay of Crete. Balos [{GoogleMap location='Gramvousa , Crete' zoom='12'}], meaning Bay of Pirates, is a lagoon and beach looking like the ones from the South Sea, whose shallow and crystal clear water shimmers in all shades of turquoise. That's why you do not enjoy the small natural wonder alone - but the onslaught is still limited due to the somewhat tedious journey.
