The building of Castle Tyrol began in the 11th century; further construction took place during the following two centuries. The fortress was the residence of the Counts of Tyrol until 1363 when the Hapsburgs took possession.

It is now home to the South Tyrol Museum of History, and is also known for its castle chapel frescoes and two distinctive Romanesque portals.
