Auf der Landkarte ist er nicht zu übersehen, der Sporn des italienischen Stiefels namens Gargano[{GoogleMap location='Gargano, Italy' zoom='7'}], bekannt für seine spektakulären Küsten. Geologisch gehört das über 1000 m aufragende Kalkgebirge in Wahrheit zum gegenüberliegenden Dalmatien. Es hat sich vor 180 Mio. Jahren aus dem Meer erhoben und nach tektonischen Verschiebungen schließlich bei Italien angedockt.

In geological terms, the limestone mountains, towering over 1,000 m, are in fact part of the opposite Dalmatia. They rose from the sea 180 million years ago and after tectonic shifts finally docked in Italy.
