The historic centre of the town has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site and one of the Italy's most famous tourist attractions. Siena is famous for its medieval cityscape and especially the 'Palio', a horse race held around the Piazza del Campo twice a year. The exterior and interior of the cathedral are built of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with addition of red marble on the façade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena.
