At the southern end of the bay the Fungus Rock rises majestically from the water, a rock that was of great importance during the Knights' time. There grows a mushroom-like plant, the 'Cynomorium'. In the medical tradition of the Order, the plant was considered a cure-all and became a universal medicine in the large hospital of Valletta, mainly thanks to its antihaemorrhagic qualities. The herb is said to work wonders against ulcers, dysentery and diarrhea. Even Europe's princely courts paid horrendous sums for the plant. Theft of the plant was mercilessly punished with compulsory labour on the knights' galleys. Only as medical investigations in the 1960s did not prove any active substances, the interest in the Cynomorium decreased.
But the unimposing herb has proved one thing: the enormous effect of placebos.

Am Südende der Bucht steigt der Fungus Rock majestätisch aus dem Wasser, ein Felsen, der in der Ritterzeit von allergrößter Bedeutung war. Dort wächst nämlich eine pilzähnliche Pflanze, der 'Malteser Schwamm'. In der medizinischen Tradition des Johanniterordens galt das Gewächs als Allheilmittel und wurde zur Universalmedizin im großen Krankenhaus von Valletta, vor allem dank seiner blutstillenden Eigenschaften. Das Kraut soll auch gegen Geschwüre, Ruhr und Durchfall wahre Wunder wirken. Sogar Europas Fürstenhöfe zahlten horrende Summen für den Pilz. Diebstähle der Pflanze wurden gnadenlos mit Frondienst auf den ritterlichen Galeeren bestraft. Erst als medizinische Untersuchungen in den 1960er Jahren keinerlei Wirkstoffe zutage förderten, sank das Interesse am Malteser Schwamm.
Doch eines hat das unscheinbare Kraut bewiesen: die enorme Wirkung von Placebos.
