Seville was conquered as part of the Reconquista by Ferdinand III of Castilia November 23, 1248 after a multi months siege. It remained in Spanish christian hands thereafter. However, economy suffered badly when over time some 300.000 moorish people left for the muslim areas of Granada and Northern Africa. Peter I. hired moorish labor from Granda in 1363 to erect the Alcázar-palace. In 1391 Jewish inhabitants of Seville were brutally persecuted: up to then they had felt safe in the quarter Barrio de Santa Cruz near the Alcázar-Palace under protection of the king.
