!!Part 6: Valverde [{GoogleMap location='el hierro Valverde'}]

Valverde (meaning the green valley) is the capital of the island of El Hierro and curiously the smallest and also the only Canary Islands capital not located by the sea. This quiet city sits on a mountain situated 600-700 m ASL and is surrounded by a beautiful nature. One of the most important festivals on the island is the Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes. In this traditional festival, which is held every four years, the islanders carry their Virgin from her sanctuary to Valverde.

This curious sculpture stands at the entrance to the Royal Township of Valverde. It is made out of recycled materials by the local artist, Rubén Armiche. It represents the Descent or la Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes. The recycled materials underneath that white surface layer range from domestic appliances through to car parts and old wood, all kinds of urban waste… This is part of a larger project called Reutilizart, the aim of which is to reuse waste to create open-air sculptures in the public places around the island.
