Where the Pyrenees sink into the waters of the Atlantic, lies one of the most plushy seaside resorts of France. In Biarritz [{GoogleMap location='France, Biarritz'}] the dictum of the German philosopher Manfred Hinrich comes true, namely, that vanity is just another word for giving artistic form to the void. But not the European in-crowd discovered the city - that happened already 150 years ago, when the Emperor Napoleon III had built a villa here. Crowned heads and politicians followed in droves. Sissi travelled to Biarritz as well as potentates from England, Spain, Portugal and Sweden. Artists such as Pablo Picasso and Rudyard Kipling were enjoying themselves here as well as Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin and Coco Chanel. Elegant hotels, upscale mansions and exclusive casinos still give Biarritz a touch of chic - even if the place now subsists on mass tourism.

Elegante Hotels, edle Villen und exklusive Casinos verleihen Biarritz immer noch einen Hauch von Schick – auch wenn der Ort mittlerweile vom Massentourismus lebt.
