Already 1,2 millions of years ago Homo erectus lived in this area, earlier than anywhere else in Europe. From him the Neanderthals developed. Finally, 40,000 years ago the homo sapiens, the modern man, arived in Europe, directly from Africa. 14,000 years ago the immigrants known as "Cro-Magnon" created magnificent cave paintings like those in Altamira [{GoogleMap location='Spain, Altamira'}]. Much later, around 1100 BC., the Iberians coming from North Africa appeared on the scene, mingled with the Celts to Celtiberians and developed a thriving urban culture. What became of the Cro-Magnons? Recent research confirms the hypothesis that they are still living among us as the Basque people. This probably oldest ethnic group in Europe had always held a special status, supported by an independent culture and a strong desire for autonomy. Their language, Basque, is not related to any other language in the world.
