The glaciaton of Greenland dates back to a unique geological event that took place about 3 million years ago. At that time the land masses of North and South America collided. As a result, the warm current, which then circulated the equator, was diverted to the north. Just this warm current, the Gulf Stream, engulfed the planet into an ice age, because the warm water evaporated on its way and increased the humidity of the northern regions. More snow fell and bit by bit, the northern hemisphere was covered with ice, until finally the entire planet cooled down. Since then, the ice has stretched and withdrawn eight times.
