Around the metropolis of Kaohsiung there are two places of special interest: The Foguangshan houses the largest Buddhist center of the country, while the town of Meinong represents a supposed highlight for lovers of old folk art. The Hakka are living here, a northern Chinese ethnic group which 1,500 years ago came to Taiwan in the first Chinese wave of immigration and now represents 15% of the total population.
