Howland Island is an uninhabited coral island located just north of the equator in the central Pacific Ocean, about 3,100 km southwest of Honolulu - almost halfway between Hawaii and Australia.

The island is composed of coral fragments and is surrounded by an active fringing reef. White breakers encircling the island indicate the position of the reef.
