The term ''Divertimento'' was in use since the end of the 17th c and merely refers to the entertaining quality of a musical work. Divertimenti are suites - or sonata-like instrumental works for varying forces - from solo instruments to an orchestra. The number of movements also varies so that as many as 12 movements were used.
