Abstract:
This thesis specifies a module called "Gateway" that makes it possible for two different programs specifications to communicate with each other. "American National Standard Z39.50, Information Retrieval Service and Protocol Specifications for Library Applications" is a standard composed of specifications for computer-to-computer linkage between different information retrieval systems. The Z39.50 gateway converts messages and data formats of the Z39.50 protocol into messages and data formats of the Hyperwave server protocol and vice versa. Thus a Z39.50 client can communicate with a Hyperwave server and receive data from a Hyperwave server. The purpose of Z39.50 is to encode the messages required to communicate between two computer systems for the specific purpose of information searching and retrieval for library applications. Although it developed from the need to exchange bibliographic information the protocol is defined to serve as a search and retrieval service completely independent of the structure of the underlying data. The Z39.50 gateway enables a Z39.50 client to send a search query to a Hyperwave server and to retrieve some objects from the server that agree with the search query. Each search string of Z39.50 is bundled with an attribute such as e.g. title. The Z39.50 gateway offers the possibility to match search attributes of the Z39.50 protocol with attributes of the Hyperwave server.
