Abstract

The Computer Graphics Interface (CGI) is a standardized, device independent interface for graphics applications. CGI is initiated by ISO, the International Standards Organization. It contains elements for generating, storing, and manipulating pictures as well as functions that are specifically targetted at the creation, manipulation, and display of raster bitmaps. The X Window System is a software package that helps the user monitor and control different contexts by separating them physically into different parts of one or more display screens. It allows each activity to have its own separate area ("window") on the screen. Since X is a network of systems from different manufacturers. Programs can be run on a remote computer and the results displayed on a local workstation. With the implementation of a CGI compatible interface for the X Window System, a device independent graphics interface combines the advantages of the X Window System (widely supported, network based, high performance).
