Wolfgangsee#

Lake Wolfgangsee (Lake Abersee), Salzburg/Upper Austria, alt. 538 m, area 13,5 km2, 10 km long and 1,9 km wide, 114 m deep; lake of very good water quality in the Salzkammergut district. Ship service, excellent conditions for aquatic sports. The lake area is situated on the territory of the province of Salzburg except for a small strip in the northeast; in the northeast, there are the Falkensteinwand cliff (alt. 795 m) and a little farther to the north the Schafberg mountain (alt. 1,782 m, can be reached by cog railway starting at St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut), in the west the Zwoelferhorn mountain (alt.1,521 m, cableway from St. Gilgen). Lake Mondsee and Lake Attersee are located to the north of Lake Wolfgangsee. Minor inlets of Lake Wolfgangsee include the Muehlbach, Kohlbach and Gunzenbach streams from the north and the Zinkenbach stream from the southwest. Near Reith, the sediments of the Zinkenbach stream have reduced the width of the lake to 250 m. Lake Wolfgangsee is drained by the River Ache/Ischl towards the River Traun. The southern shore of the lake is accessible via the road from St. Gilgen to Bad Ischl (alt. 469 m). Important bathing resorts on the shores of Lake Wolfgang include St. Gilgen in the northwest, St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut in the north and Strobl in the east.
