Surgeon: Originally physicians trained in performing operations were considered craftsmen; in Austria, their image improved when the "Imperial Military Academy for Surgery" (Josephinum) was established, and surgery was subsequently recognised as field of medicine with its own scientific status (1786). During the 19th century it gained world-wide reputation at the University of Vienna, with F. Schuh (1804-1903) as one of the outstanding pioneers.
