Gaul, Franz Xaver, geb. 1837#

b. Vienna, July 27, 1837, d. Vienna, July 3, 1906, painter of portraits, historical and genre scenes; son of Franz Gaul, brother of Gustav Gaul. Began his career with battle paintings, became interested in the theatre; 1868-1879 costume painter at the two Viennese court theatres, 1879-1900 senior technical inspector and head of the decor and costumes department of the court opera; created a number of scenes, independent show ballets and festivals; established an extensive collection of costumes, costume illustrations; cartoonist (mainly sketches of actors and the court theatres).
