Shah,RozinaKhattak andHasanM.Khan Additional information isavailableat theendof thechapter Abstract In this chapter, free radical kinetics with the help of competition kinetics and some experimental results calculated by competition kinetics to find out the rate constant of reactive species (●OH, eaq , ●H) with target compound, which is used by radiation chemists is briefly discussed. The competition kinetics method is well validated by taking ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin andbezafibrate as example compounds. Thebimolec- ular rate constants of hydroxyl radical, hydrate electron and hydrogen atomhas been calculated forexample solute species (ciprofloxacin, norfloxacinandbezafibrate). Keywords: competitionkinetics, rate constants, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, bezafibrate 1. Introduction Radiationchemistry involvesextensive studyof competitionbetween fast reactionsof transient species, reactiveandintermediates. Suchknowledge isuseful to investigate themechanismofa radiolytic reactionandtoproposewhichprocess is takingplaceandwhichexperimental condi- tionisgoverningareactionandtoknowthechemicalkineticsofaradiolyticreactionunderstudy. Generally, in a chemical process, the reactant is converted to products in an individual step. However, inaradiation inducedchemical reaction, all stepsare taken intoconsideration includ- ingdepositionofenergybyachargedparticle in thesystemandthen formationofa final stable chemical product, and certainlywill be a rather complex set of reactions [1]. In the following sections, wewillbrieflydiscussthefastkinetics, i.e.competitionkineticstofindtheunknownrate constantsofacompoundwithreactive species likehydroxyl radical (●OH)orhydratedelectron (eaq ), by consideringa reference compoundwhose rate constantwith these reactive species is alreadyknown. © TheAuthor(s).
