names of the illustrious citizens were selected by
the municipality after a thorough examination
of their works, merits and curricula. They were
honoured with the gift of a sepulchre in the crypt
under the hall floor and with the dedication of
a marble bust on a bracket of the same stone
placed on the walls of the Pantheon. The sculp-
tures were the work of local artists chosen by the
local government among the professors and pu-
pils of the local Academy of Fine Arts. This Hall
of Fame, today a room for lay funerary ceremon-
ies and therefore dramatically changed, stood on
the area formerly occupied by the cell of the Car- thusian prior, enlarged with the elimination of
the subdivision between the ground and first
floors. The original square plan was changed in-
to an oval shape framed by pairs of Corinthian
columns supporting a vault. On the ceiling, the
painter Filippo Pedrini represented an allegory
of Wisdom introducing Bologna to the Catholic
religion in the presence of the Sciences and the
Arts while Fame blew her trumpet above their
heads (Fig. 11).13
In 1927 when the Pantheon was officially
closed, the marble busts of the great men were
moved to the first floor of the town hall, inside
