names of the illustrious citizens were selected by the municipality after a thorough examination of their works, merits and curricula. They were honoured with the gift of a sepulchre in the crypt under the hall floor and with the dedication of a marble bust on a bracket of the same stone placed on the walls of the Pantheon. The sculp- tures were the work of local artists chosen by the local government among the professors and pu- pils of the local Academy of Fine Arts. This Hall of Fame, today a room for lay funerary ceremon- ies and therefore dramatically changed, stood on the area formerly occupied by the cell of the Car- thusian prior, enlarged with the elimination of the subdivision between the ground and first floors. The original square plan was changed in- to an oval shape framed by pairs of Corinthian columns supporting a vault. On the ceiling, the painter Filippo Pedrini represented an allegory of Wisdom introducing Bologna to the Catholic religion in the presence of the Sciences and the Arts while Fame blew her trumpet above their heads (Fig. 11).13 In 1927 when the Pantheon was officially closed, the marble busts of the great men were moved to the first floor of the town hall, inside Fig. 13: Farpi Vignoli, Tomb of Fabio and Flavio Frassetto, 1951, Bologna, Mu- nicipal Cemetery.
