from a different background. A similar process seems to have taken place with
the drolleries that accompany the miniatures between columns and in margins
(pl. 10b). These often conclude with thin threads that reduce right down to the un-
derdrawings, which have exactly the same leaf forms as those used by the northern
French master in his coloured initials (pl. 10a). This procedure is further confirmed
by an unfinished initial from the northern master on fol. 34v (pl. 10c), where the
shapes of the leaves correspond to those of the drolleries (pl. 6c,d).
